The mechanisms of cancer pathology are incredibly complex with layers upon layer of mechanisms discovered regularly. A recent study from the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center has uncovered unique structures within the mitochondria of tumor cells. These lipid droplets, along with other organelles, organize to support tumor cell metabolism and mitochondrial activity. As a result, the researchers have figured out that depending on the type of organization within mitochondria, lung tumors have different nutritional preferences such as sugar (glucose) or fat. This was discovered using an imaging technique known as positron emission tomography, or PET. With this new information, researchers can better map out a structural and functional atlas of lung tumors, which can help them figure out more of the tumors’ strengths and weaknesses. After all, one of the best ways to fight an opponent is to know your enemy. With each new piece of information, better treatment pathways will become clearer. 1. Is this research aimed primarily towards large cell cancer or will it help in the development of small cell lung cancer treatment as well?
